Houses evacuated and locals told to stay indoors as flames tear through Ayr home

Homes have been evacuated and other local residents have been told to shut windows and doors after flames tore through a building in a Scots seaside town.

The incident took place at St Catherine’s Road in Ayr this afternoon as plumes of white, grey and black smoke filled the sky with firefighters battling to bring the blaze under control.

Road closures are in place due to the incident and police are urging the public to avoid the area.

Firefighters remain on the scene after the alarm was raised just after 3pm on Tuesday.

Pictures from the scene show local residents looking on as firefighters tackle the fire.

A fire engine was pictured at the scene and two firefighters were photographed shooting jets of water on the building, as smoke came off the roof of the property.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 3.10pm on Tuesday, 29 April to reports of a fire within a domestic property on St Catherine’s Road, Ayr.

“Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the scene, and crews remain in attendance. There are no reported casualties.”

A Police Scotland press release said: “Emergency services are in attendance following a fire at a property in the St Catherines Road area of Ayr around 3.35pm on Tuesday, 29 April, 2025.

“There are no reported injuries. Some nearby properties have been evacuated as a precaution and local residents are advised to keep windows and doors shut. Road closures are in place at Thornyflat Place and Cherry Blossom Way. Please avoid the area at this time.”
